Want vs Need

Category: Uncategorized

Want and need. It’s funny how we use these two words as if they were synonyms. They are anything but.

I think in the troubled times we have today we are finally starting to learn the difference between these two four letter words. The relevance of want is slowly being overtaken by the necessity of need.

I for one think this is a good thing. For to long we have filled our lives with our wants (I know I am guilty of this) and while it brought some level of satisfaction, it wasn’t what we needed.

What I need, my family, a roof over my head, food on my table, clothes on my back, laughter, good friends, a good book and more; I have. And I am grateful. I still have many wants. But they can wait.

The search continues

Category: Uncategorized

I never thought I would be in a position where having a masters degree in education wouldn’t give me an edge. Most any place in the USA or in the world, they are begging for teachers to come. Especially those that are highly qualified.

Not so in Western PA. My guess is due to the abnormally high pay level and the fact that there are numerous teaching colleges in the area, this place is crawling with applicants who want a teaching job and very few openings.

It’s frustrating to say the least. But I’m pressing forward, hoping that I will at some point even start to get an interview.

Where have all my cartoons gone?

Category: Uncategorized

An entire generation of children whose family can’t afford to pay for Boomerang or doesn’t get it in their service area is missing out on countless, great, animated classics.

I miss my Saturday mornings of Looney Tunes, Merry Melodies, Tom and Jerry, Droopy Dog, and all that jazz.

Damn you cable television.

Swine flu (aka H1N1)

Category: Uncategorized

It stands to reason that precautions should be taken anytime there is a new virus that our bodies are not used too. After all, isn’t that the moral of “War of the Worlds”? (well, I think it is).

But people do need to calm down. Like any virus we should be taking simple measures to protect ourselves. Wash your hands (don’t just use Purell. Actually wash them). Cover your mouth when sneezing our coughing with your arm or crook of your elbow, not your hands. Limit contact with others if they are ill. Stay home when you are ill. Etc.

Every year 36,000 people die from the regular flu. The CDC has already said it doesn’t look like it’s going to be as bad as they thought and that we aren’t even at pandemic level (which btw, has nothing to do with the strength of disease or virus).

So everyone relax, take a deep breath (not around those who are sick), and get rest and fluids. We’re going to be okay.

Work paying off

Category: Uncategorized

Our wasteland of a garden is slowly starting to take shape. The two trees we planted last spring survived the harsh winter and have started to bud.  The bulbs I spent three days laying in the ground have started to break on through and some even flower.

It has been a lot of work to get this garden going. And a lot more work is headed our way.  From digging the pond to creating the “living room”.  With the current economy the transition will take a bit more time then we first planned but it’s getting there.  One seed at a time.

What a find

Category: Uncategorized

I have fallen in love with a new food. In my constant quest of finding foods that are not only healthy for me, versatile in their use, as well as tasty, I stumbled upon Fage (pronounced fa-yah) Greek strained yogurt.

Not being a fan of regular plain yogurt (which has the faint after taste of vomit) I was a bit skeptical. But I figured what they hell and gave it a try. I bought the ones that you can mix with a little bit of fruit or honey (provided with the tasty confection) and feel in love. It doesn’t have the bitter after taste and the consistency is like a wonderful, rich, cream cheese. I can’t wait to use it in some recipes.

You can find out more about Fage at their website

British Invasion

Category: Uncategorized

In the 60s it was the Beatles, the Stone, Herman’s Hermits and the like.  America pulsated and rocked with British Invasion.

In the 21st century it’s the Geico Gecko,  the Air Wick Elephant, and that really weird voice over guy for Pledge.  Our airwaves and televisions are once again being invaded by the British but this time it’s to flog us products. Why is that if it has a British accent it is supposed to be more appealing?

Granted, I find my husband’s accent very appealing but that’s not the reason I bought him, I mean married him.
